Castello di Miramare in the Gulf of Trieste Italy

When on holiday in April 2011
my cousins took me all over the wonderful
area where they live, Friuli Venezia Giuli,
most North-Eastern Region of Italy.

We went to Miramare Castle....
19th-century castle on the Gulf of Trieste near Trieste, northeastern Italy. It was built from 1856 to 1860 for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife, Charlotte of Belgium, later Emperor Maximilian I and Empress Carlota of Mexico, based on a design by Carl Junker.

The castle's grounds include an extensive cliff and seashore park of 22 hectares (54 acres) designed by the archduke. The grounds were completely re-landscaped to feature numerous tropical species of trees and plants.

Please CLICK on first photo and they will enlarge.
We couldn't get really close as there
were renovations going on, but the gardens
and views are beautiful.

Top right in photo below  is my cousin Valerie and me ..
Centre right is Gianni (Vals husband and me) .

We had to drive through here first, strange because we never
see these in the UK ... !!

I ♥♥♥ Italy

  2. Beautiful images of a place that is on my list of places to see.
So near and yet so far, somehow that corner of Italy has eluded me so far.

    A wonderful Sunday to you,

    1. Hello Merisi , a beautiful corner of Italy, which to be truthful I had not really heard of, . Tourism is good for these places but you know sometimes that you just want to keep the little places as they are :-) Have a wonderful week x

  3. Lovely pics, yet again Anne, 'tis little wonder you love to travel, you have family and friends all over the world, truly a cosmopolitan lady!
I wish I could travel further afield, but at present my crumbling spine disallows it.
In the meantime, I shall carry on reading your lovely blog, and dream,

    love Di..xx

  9. Thanks Cathy, yes it is gorgeous, but to be honest I might never of gone to that part of Italy if it had not been for my cousins living there. And so you are right.. needs more exploring :-)

  10. Anne, You make me laugh. Have you met a foreign country you didn't love? I hope not. My husband discovered he had cousins in northern Italy and we visited them six years ago. His grandparents came to the United States around the turn of the century(1900) when that part of Italy was under Austrian control. Their last name was Fondriest, so they always thought the name mean "from Trieste." Turns out it was up in the mountains instead. Still, gorgeous.

  11. Hi Anne,
What an elegant castle, all dressed in white :). It is amazing all that we learn about History while we travel, even just casually. I enjoy that part of travel very much.

Thank you for sharing these lovely photos.
