Bike Ride to Blackberries!

This afternoon was a lovely day, so I thought I would go and pick some Blackberries, yes I know I have a little bush, but I don't get many, they get eaten on the way to the car, or getting my bike out of the garage!!

It is a easy bike ride, with proper cycle paths, and I know where there is a massive bush....after this I cycled around the long way home...

This used to be a huge tradition on a weekend, and it was quite exciting until you couldn't find any, or you pricked yourselves on the thorns, or worse still, you got stung by the stingys....No wonder my boys stopped coming with me!!!

Every year I do this, Why do I do it? I don't make Jam and I don't bake..but you can bet the year I stop, someone will say "Have you got any blackberries".

Does anyone else remember doing this as a child. Is it a big tradition in other countries too!

  1. Hello Anne! I have a childhood memory of my family going for sunday outings to pick blueberries. It was a tradition in our family and I remember I thought it was extremely boring...
Nowadays I get my blueberries in the grocery-store... ;0)

Lovely pictures you share with us!
    Hugs from Sweden!

  6. I may pick some berries tomorrow or later this weekend. I like to make this blackberry thing that's not really a pie or a cobbler . I got the recipe from The Pioneer Woman's site under cooking and fruit desserts.

Check it out ...I made it last year and it was really good especially with ice cream.

  9. I wish we had berries growing wild around here but we don't! I do love berries of all kinds.

I have to make do with figs from the little wild fig tree in my back garden. Made some fig preserves today, in fact, after picking about 100 figs.

I noticed that pear tree in one of your collages...some delicious fruit will be ready soon.

  10. What a gorgeous day and a wonderful bike ride for blackberries! I have never had that much in my fridge at any one time as the only way to get them is from the grocer's. I'm thinking blackberry gelato just looking at those. I'm envious!

  12. Yes! There used to be loads of blackberry bushes along small streets when I was growing up. My dad would take my sister and I around to pick them and then we'd bring them home and either my mom would make amazing pie or jam...but in the interest of fire prevention the city cut the brambles down, and now the blackberries are only in supermarkts...

  13. Yes, I used to go "a-blackberrying" as a child. And loads used to grow near where I lived in Cardiff. They are hard to find here, though. Lovely photos and thanks for bringing back happy memories. Love the horse!

  14. I was brought up in the southwest of the States and there aren't any berries growing wild there. We picked pinion nuts once. My mother wasn't into canning or baking so those sort of memories aren't in my memory bank.

  18. Oh definitely! And every year I get a box of blackberries in the freezer that can be used throughout the year for crumbles.

Didn't the blackberry season used to be later? I always associate it with autumn and september.

  20. Oh my gosh Anne, those look AMAZING. Berries are SO expensive where I live. I used to eat them all the time in Europe as they were so cheap in comparison. I've been offline for ages, so just finally catching up with your blog!
