Today Tuesday 5th February is....

Shrove Tuesday...In the UK, Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day.

Pancakes are associated with Lent because the 40 days of Lent form a period of fasting, during which only the plainest foodstuffs may be eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar are disposed of immediately prior to the start of the fast.

We also have a tradition called The Pancake Race..this is said to have originated in 1445, when a lady in Olney, Buckinghamshire was so busy making pancakes, that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake.

For all of you that have cooked pancakes, enjoy!!

  1. I just found out about this tradition yesterday when I was reading about different festivities for Fat Tues. So interesting...but I didn't have any pancakes, too bad.

  2. We totally forgot to make crepes for the second year in a row. I did see kids covered in flour which I guess is a tradition too.
